Our Story

False River Golf & Country Club has been a part of the Pointe Coupee community for more than six decades, with a history rooted in dedication, volunteerism, and a shared vision.

The idea for False River Golf & Country Club was born in 1962 when a group of local residents set out to create a place where families and friends could gather to enjoy golf and fellowship. Before the club was officially incorporated, a temporary board was formed to guide the project. Mr. Leo Mougeot, who served as the club’s treasurer, purchased the abandoned farmland selected as the future home of the club on behalf of the founding members. The vision for the club was brought to life through the dedication of many volunteers and community leaders. Major Hebert, a club member and original architect of the clubhouse, generously designed the building that would become the heart of False River Golf & Country Club. Brad Lancaster served as the design engineer for the original 9-hole golf course. His expertise laid the foundation for what became a playable and enduring course.  Under the leadership of the club’s first president, John Morrison, members worked tirelessly to establish the club and create a place for families to gather for generations. Among the driving forces behind the project was Warren Braud, an original board member whose leadership, determination, and commitment were instrumental in turning the dream of False River Golf &Country Club into a reality.

Construction of the original golf course was truly a community effort. With the exception of the clubhouse, pool, and other buildings, nearly every aspect of the course was built through the hard work and volunteer labor of the club’s members. Their commitment laid the foundation for what would become a cherished community institution.

False River Golf & Country Club officially opened in 1963 with a nine-hole golf course featuring 18 different teeing areas and an initial membership of 118 families. Just four years later, in 1967, the club expanded with the addition of a swimming pool, bathhouse, and locker facilities, further establishing itself as a destination for recreation and family activities.

For more than 50 years, the club operated as a member-owned organization, becoming known for its welcoming atmosphere, family-oriented traditions, and strong sense of community. Generations of members created lasting memories through golf, swimming, social events, and lifelong friendships.

A new chapter began in 2023 when longtime member Mr. Jim Moore, who has been part of the club since 1968, acquired the property and launched an ambitious revitalization effort. His vision honors the club’s rich heritage while investing in its future.“I joined False River in 1968 and fell in love with the club and the community,” he said. “After joining, I began helping the member-owned golf course with improvements for more than 50 years. When I first joined, the club was family oriented. All my children grew up there – spending summers at the pool, then off to play golf, and back to the pool to eat the best hamburgers in the area! Over the years, like other clubs, the family-oriented activities started to dwindle away. During the pandemic, I made the decision to purchase the club because I wanted to bring back that family atmosphere from years ago to our club and community. I am in my late 80s, and I want to leave a legacy to the community that I love so much. Our vision is to become one of the top golf courses in Louisiana. I want the best and I want it for the community. When it’s all said and done, I will have invested $40 million into this project and I am aware I will never see a return financially. I’m doing it because I want to leave a golf course and club that families and all ages can enjoy for many generations to come. I am doing this for the people in this community to have a first-rate golf course and country club. And I am doing this to attract golfers from across the country and around the world to come to Ventress, Louisiana, and see how special this place really is! I want my investment to strengthen our local economy and the community as a whole.”

The transformation has already brought exciting additions, including a brand-new swimming pool that opened in May 2025 and pickleball courts that opened in April 2026. Looking ahead, the most significant project in the club’s history is underway: the expansion and redesign of the golf course into a full 18-hole championship layout. Designed by golf course architect Nathan Crace, the new course will embrace the timeless principles of Golden Age golf architecture. Tommy Schook of Sports Contractors Unlimited is leading construction, helping shape the next chapter in the club’s history for generations to come.
